EWA pipeline construction project

EWA provides security of supply

The Etzel-Wardenburg (EWA) pipeline section is part of the natural gas transmission pipeline from Etzel via Wardenburg to Drohne and is intended to secure the supply of natural gas to Germany.

The EWA section connects to the Wilhelmshaven Pipeline Link (WAL) at the Etzel storage facility. The 60 km long section runs largely parallel to the existing NETRA (Norddeutschen-Erdgas-Transversale) pipeline. The Etzel-Wardenburg-Drohne pipeline will feed natural gas from the Netherlands, Norway and Wilhelmshaven into the German gas transmission network. The EWA section has also been designed to transport hydrogen.

Planning status

In the fall of 2024, we received approval from the State Office for Mining, Energy, and Geology (LBEG) in Hanover to begin construction ahead of schedule. In January 2025, the planning approval decision was issued, marking the start of the construction project.

Built in two construction lots, we celebrated the final weld—technically known as the “Golden Seam”—in Wiefelstede in November 2025. The “golden seam” symbolizes the connection between the construction phases. The Etzel-Wardenburg pipeline was then commissioned in December 2025. Currently, minor work and weather-dependent reclamation efforts are still underway.
